First and foremost, we were briefed on the INTI ICAD DESIGN DAY 2020. The theme for this year ICAD design day is "Reiterate Bearings". It means to repeat something for emphasis or clarity. In addition, the words 'bearings' refers to an understanding of directions to know our position. Furthermore, ICAD Manifesto have four different areas which are Ethical Design, Industrial Relations, Multidisciplinary Practice and Competitive Edge.
Ethical Design - encourage the practice of featuring new methods and brainstorming for fresh concepts to make a different for the betterment of lifestyles and the people around us. Industrial Relations - pride ourselves on the relationships forged the industry, providing students with well-rounded experience of the theory and practice through collaborative efforts. Multidisciplinary Practice - strive to produce a collective of professionals that are experienced in merging art-forms in new and innovation ways, bringing ideas between traditional and modern expressions. Competitive Edge - create a lifelong learning experiences for career development through engagements in various competitions.
Our group chosen a topic on - Harvesting a Learning Curve from Start to Submission:
How does taking part in design competitions prove essential for design students for their career advancement? Some of my findings were:
To begin with, students have to always challenge themselves to strives for their best in whatever they do. Not everyone who enters the competition will win. On the other hand, even if students don’t receive any of the big prizes, they can still benefit from the opportunity to challenge theirselves. In addition, students will learn new things and develop new skills. This shows that they will gain better experience from it.
Next, exposure is a great form when participating a competitions. Students are able to promote their work to the industry professionals. Not only that, it also provides them the opportunities for emerging professionals to be recognise for their fresh ideas and a platform to showcase their work. Therefore, by winning in competition it can help them to gain the attention of potential employers, land new clients or get a promotion.
Moreover, some of my group's findings were, in competition students are required to think on their feet, analyse results of their processes, and make improvements and determine a new course of action. As a consequence, students will have a better responsibilities to make decision by themselves - developing agency. Great and excellent recognition when winning competitions will grand the students to have a better opportunities in their job career. In our subsequence findings and research, we are to create a slides and video presentation.
