To begin with, on week 4 (14th of May) we were briefed on a project regarding on “Photonovel.” So what is Photonovel? It is a graphic novel / comic that make use of the photograph as a main context. In addition, I have to design a photonovel that experiment with the genre’s narrative techniques and tropes to tell a story that inspired by and starring an outsider. Not only that, I’ve find it very interesting and exciting projects to look forward to it. Furthermore, our lecturer has given us some useful article and example to read on. This will help us to understand deeper and gives us some idea of what was Photonovel regarding about.
Moreover, all of us were divided into five different groups. I was placed in Group 3 and assign to read the article on “The Orphan of Cinema and Literature: Photonovel as Photobook.” Part of the group assignment question, I did some research and findings on the outline of the key idea of each of the paragraph. (Highlight and try to explain the ideas). Examples:
Istanbul Calling Photonovel Turkish Style, 2016 (Photographed - Markus Schaden)
This way of narration, first came to light in 1947 in Italy. Photonovel has considered something new - use of various mediums in a creative way. Popular Italian techniques - photomontage in magazines, cinema and celebrity culture of the 1920s and 30s. Photonovel was affected by the thematic and narrative aspects of dramatic literature. (Narin, n.d.)
An article about Killing
Turkish photonovels, is "Killing" which was originally an Italian photonovel series. The story - there was an anti-hero with a skeleton costume and he is killing young and beautiful women. This Turkish photonovel is based on a melodrama (character that appears to the emotion). It became popular and first published in Turkey. Hence it was a fantastic photonovel incorporating the elements from thrillers and horror movies. The first issue was published by the Son Newspaper in 1967. (Narin, n.d.)
Tercuman Newspaper, 1973
Literature adaptations in photonovels apart from film adaptations. "A Mind At Peace" was published in Tercuman Newspaper in 1973. A Mind At Peace - fluid scenario as a service for popular culture and the need to appeal to various social classes. (Narin, n.d.)
Geride Kalan Gunler
Photonovel has been a popular culture media. In photonovels, the scenarist and actors and photographers are in the background. The projects - photographers are working as cinematographers. (Narin, n.d.)
