Specific Context

As a Malaysian why do people always rush when eating their meals? It is because when people are eating fast it can save time and other activities could be done faster at the same time. There are some examples such as eating at an office desk, eating food in the car / public transport before getting home and eating while working at computers. (Rubaum, 2013).

Furthermore, ‘healthy eating’ has become a secondary concern in people's lives. So what cause this to happen? It is due to consumers who do not prioritise their time towards school / work rather than their own health, taking less than half an hour to consume their meals. (Daum, 2016). This shows that it may lead to serious complications such as abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhoea, indigestion, nausea and other symptoms as well. (Nguyen, 2016)

Majority of people like to eat outside food nowadays. Not only that, there are more than 64% of Malaysians eat at least one meal per day outside of home, 36% who eat at home and 12.5% have at least one meal that comes from outside. (Tan, 2014)

Moreover, there are some people who like to skip meals - breakfast / lunch / dinner which will lead to poor nutrition & malnutrition to the body. Some of the causes are stress, tiredness and slowing down performance which will increase the risk of developing some illnesses and other health problems. (Nguyen, 2016)

Over the weeks from 27th – 29th May 2020, the researcher has conducted a survey on Malaysian Eating Habits (based on our usual lifestyle not during the MCO period.) In total the researcher received 88 responses from the questionnaire. In the subsequence paragraph, the researcher would like to highlight some of the interesting points, which answer to the research topic.

Based on the survey questionnaire, 44.3% majority of people choose no because eating slowly helps digestion. Most of them were females, however a number of people who chose somewhat it is a habit of eating fast because they have insufficient time to have their meals. Not to mention, those who choose yes because they are busy were mostly working adults. As a result, they prioritise their work rather than eating their meals. It can be said that these groups of people assume that health is their secondary concern.

Many working adults and students would prefer cooking their own meal instead of eating out and it can be said that this is due to hygienic issues. They prefer home cooked meals as it is clean. Those who choose eating out might have hectic schedules and activities therefore it does not permit them to have the time to cook their own meal.

There were about half of the females and males who ate their meals within 10-20 minutes. It might be because of their busy lifestyle which they choose to prioritise in certain activities and work rather than taking care of their own health. On the other hand, this may lead to serious health complications. This shows that Malaysian people are always rushing when having their meals.

Lastly, rice and dishes were chosen as Malaysians’ favourite daily meal and intake. Most of them choose that because it is very convenient and easy to purchase. So far, noodles are also considered a secondary meal.
